Multi‐isotope analysis of primary and secondary dentin as a mean to broaden intra‐life dietary reconstruction. A case from Longobard Italy

This exploratory study proposes an original intra-life history investigation through sequential analysis of the isotopic composition carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur (CNS) on both primary secondary dentin a tooth (M1). We focus elderly woman from Longobard Italy (6th to 8th c. CE), who showed unprecedented case cranial surgery, presented in companion paper by Micarelli colleagues. Sequential stable CNS isotope first molar collagen allows us infer diet, mobility, health, physiological stress between approximately 3 months after birth 9.5 years old (primary dentin) early adulthood until death (secondary dentin). Isotopic results highlight following: (i) long weaning period (ending at 4 years), followed (ii) specific including contribution C4 crops childhood (approximately 5.5 possibly concomitant with mobility. While shows generally homogeneous diet during adulthood, longitudinal provided information stresses that likely occurred periods difficult health conditions. work emphasizes importance measuring complete sequences (including when present) for broaden histories ancient populations.
